Archant

All urged to go along to the exhibition at The Plough on Friday (February 7) from 10am-7pm.

THE first picture of how the proposed new Waitrose supermarket at Great Torrington has been released in advance of Friday’s public exhibition.

The multi-million pound proposal by Waitrose and developer Kimberley would see the new 18,000 square foot store built on the Sydney House Car Park off South Street and the neighbouring derelict market garden.

If planning permission is granted work would begin next year, with the store expected to open in 2016. Waitrose says it would bring 150 new jobs to the area.

Local people have been invited to go along to The Plough Arts Centre on Friday from 10am-7pm and have their say on the proposals.

“We are looking forward to sharing our plans and hearing the views of local residents which will be integral in helping to shape our proposal before we submit a planning application,” said a Waitrose spokesman.

“There is a long way to go, but should we be given the opportunity in the future to open in Great Torrington, we want to ensure we make a positive contribution to the town not only as a significant employer, but in helping the town thrive for many years to come.”

The plans can also be viewed online at www.waitrosegreattorrington.co.uk.

  • A small town indeed, Smiffy, and one wonders where all the customers will come from in a town you wouldn't consider to have your average Waitrose customer in abundance. Driving in from the wealthier rural hinterland I suspect, plus a fleet of vans delivering to online customers across North Devon. I can't see it helping the independent traders in the town centre much, certainly not those that provide the essentials. And the traffic? - horrendous.

  • 150 jobs: mostly part time jobs that cannot support a family. Store opening hours of 14 hours a day Monday to Saturday - so promised increased footfall in town could be when all other shops are closed! Access problems to this site, 4 articulated lorries a day from Waitrose going through the narrow streets, fleet of online delivery vans, extra cars, etc., etc. Pedestrian safety. Parking restrictions for local residents. Viability of small shops. Free coffee everyday without any instore purchases (for Waitrose loyalty card holders) - how does this help the local cafes? Waitrose publicity misleading. Wrong site.
