New houses approved despite fears over ‘dangerous’ access

Proposals for eight new houses on land off Belvoir Road in Bideford approved by majority of Torridge plans committee.

PLANS for eight new homes in Bideford have been given the go ahead despite concerns raised over the ‘dangerous’ access to the site.
The terraced houses at Belvoir Road with access and parking spaces will be built on land owned by Kingsley School and sold to raise funds for the school.
The site is currently derelict and was formerly used as allotments.
But during a lengthy debate at Torridge District Council’s plans committee meeting yesterday (Thursday), a local resident spoke of his worries regarding the road safety.
"Nothing is going to be going down that road at any substantial speed to my mind."
Anthony Koorlander, a resident of Lime Grove, said the corner on which the access to the land was situated had seen two fatal accidents in the 31 years he had lived there.
“Between five or six times day there are near misses on that corner,” he said.
“For two days I had a video camera on the corner where the site is accessed and saw around 15 incidents where cars nearly collided.”
Cllr Peter Christie, standing in for Cllr David Lausen, said he too had lived in Lime Grove for 25 years and understood the resident’s concerns.
“It is a blind corner,” he told councillors.
“Since this application was submitted 17 months ago a new estate of 67 houses has been built just up the road.
“There has been improvements made to Belvoir Road in the form of a new pavement which has narrowed the road even more.
“It is a disaster waiting to happen and I am astonished Devon County Council cannot see a problem here.”
But Councillor Howard Ratledge disagreed and said: “Nothing is going to be going down that road at any substantial speed to my mind.
“They have to drive down there carefully to get to that point; I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.”
Planning permission was granted by the plans committee with seven councillors voting to approve the application and two voting against it.
