North Devon’s dog issues are up for discussion during new council-led awareness campaign.
MAN’S best friend is the focus of a new campaign being launched in North Devon this weekend.
North Devon Council and the Dogs Trust Ilfracombe are joining forces to celebrate dogs and responsible owners, as well as raise awareness about what more can be done to address dog issues in the area.
The Live Love Wag campaign, kicks off on Sunday with a sponsored dog walk at Saunton Sands.
The campaign will highlight issues such as stray dogs; dog re-homing, dog fouling and other types of enforcement.
There will also be a number of community events where dog owners and other members of the public can get advice on various dog matters.
Cllr Rodney Cann, the council’s executive member for the environment, said: “North Devon is very much a dog-friendly district, with most dog owners being responsible.
“This campaign is about coming together to celebrate this, while offering advice and information.
“Like other areas, dog fouling can also be an issue and we will be going out into the community to try to tackle this and raise awareness of what the public can do to help us.”
The Dogs Trust’s re-homing centre manager, Pam Stow, added: “People in North Devon often associate us as a dog-rehoming charity. While that is our main focus, there are so many different elements to our work, with education at the heart of what we do.
“We are delighted to be involved in this campaign, to reflect the benefits of having a dog and raise awareness of how we can all work together to tackle other dog-related issues.”
On Wednesday, the dog warden will be out offering advice to dog owners and the wider public as part of Ilfracombe Town Team’s Spring Clean Week.
Other events being planned over the next few weeks include free microchipping days in Barnstaple and Ilfracombe, as well as a high visibility dog advice patrol in Barnstaple.
The Dogs Trust’s popular Fun Day and Dog Show takes place on June 22.
