The community bus which serves the Bideford area is now taking shoppers up the steep streets to the Pannier Market.

BIDEFORD Pannier Market is now being served by two bus routes after a long battle by the Chamber of Commerce.

The number 14 and 16 bus, run by Torridge Community Transport Association, service the Quay, Morrisons and since January 6, Bideford Pannier Market.

Duncan Goodman, manager of Torridge Community Transport Association, said:

“This is an exciting new service which will be able to deliver folk right to Bideford Pannier Market, and is available thanks to Devon County Council’s Community Transport delegated fund from the Dept for Transport.”

The routes, which operate from Corborough Road in Westward Ho!, through Appledore, Northam and Bideford, provide a two-hourly service, three times a day.

Graham Blight, of Bideford Chamber of Commerce, said: “Bideford Chamber of Commerce has been delighted to help and support Duncan and Torridge Community Transport Association.

“We believe that this transport link can only be a positive thing for the Pannier Market and Bideford in general, so we would encourage potential passengers to find their nearest bus stop and use this great addition to explore the town.”

Sam Robinson, until recently county councillor for Bideford East, added: “This service has been a long time in coming, and we have encountered our fair share of, one might say, road-blocks and obstacles in the way.

“But, thanks to the persistence of people like Maurice Pearce of the Chamber of Commerce, the ‘challenges are there to be overcome’ spirit of Duncan Goodman, and my being able to help secure the DfT funding from Devon County Council, the ‘Bus to Market’ is now a reality.

“It is particularly pleasing for me that people from East-the-Water will now be able to catch a bus right to the door of the Pannier Market and return from there or from the Quay.”
