League of Friends donation will improve the experience of female patients at North Devon District Hospital.

A new £18,000 state-of-the-art screen has been donated to the Ladywell Unit at North Devon District Hospital.

The donation from the hospital League of Friends means female patients undergoing a colposcopy, where a consultant checks the surface of the cervix for abnormalities, can now see the procedure on an advanced screen.

The multi-functional device is being used in the Petter Day Treatment Unit and is set to improve the experience of hundreds of North Devon women each year.

The screen can also be used for staff training and in the future will be crucial in allowing other outpatient procedures to be performed.

It follows a recent audit by Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust which showed that many gynaecology patients would like to watch a screen while a diagnosis was being made.

“The unit offers a wide range of procedures to treat many women’s conditions,” said Oudai Ali, locum consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist for the trust.

“The new screen is a fantastic piece of equipment which will enable us to further improve the service.

“We would like to thank the League of Friends for their very generous donation, which will have a major impact for outpatients for years to come.”
