Volunteers urged to step forward at open meeting on September 4 and help keep Braunton youth club going.

A Braunton mum-of-two is urging people to volunteer their time to keep the village youth club going.

Katie Major is hoping to build a team of volunteers to run The Yard after Devon County Council scales back the service this autumn.

She is urging people to attend a meeting at the centre at 7pm on Thursday of next week (September 4) to discuss how the service could be run.

“I already have a list of about 15 people who are interested in volunteering but we haven’t met yet,” Katie told the Gazette.

“The idea is to carry on running it as it has been run – hopefully with advice from the hub in Barnstaple – but I can’t do it on my own.

“I have already submitted a proposal to the county council to say how I propose it is run but I hope other people will come to the meeting to say how they would do it.”

The council is cutting youth services, retaining only eight ‘hubs’ in the county, including in Barnstaple and Bideford.

It is offering other towns and villages a share of £200,000 to enable community groups or volunteers to start up or run their own youth clubs.

The Museum of British Surfing, which leases the building from Braunton Parish Council, has already indicated it is keen to support a voluntary group wanting to run a youth service from the site.

The Braunton club is currently open two evenings a week, with around 30 youngsters attending each session.

“No one is saying the youth centre is closing because it is rubbish – it’s closing because the council no longer has the money to run it,” added Katie.
