Around 4,000 people signed a petition to save the Devon County Council run home, which was handed to MP Geoffrey Cox.

AROUND 4,000 people have signed a petition to save Fairlea Care Home from closure by Devon County Council.

The petition was handed to Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox as he was met by dozens of protesters outside of the home in Northam on Friday.

Mr Cox spent time looking around the home before talking to staff and other stakeholders about possible options for its future.

The county council-run home is one of those proposed to close under cost cutting measures. Consultation on the proposals ends today (Tuesday).

Mr Cox said: “Fairlea is a much valued care home and is greatly prized in the local area. It is a great shame that its future is uncertain as it provides an essential service to many.

“Regrettably due to the savings which must be made by Devon County Council, it is probable that Fairlea will no longer be council run.

“Our focus must therefore be on trying to find alternative means of keeping this valued and prized service open.

“I am in frequent communication with Devon County Council on this issue and will also be doing everything I can to support those who have an interest in Fairlea, to try to find a viable option for its future which allows us to retain this important community asset.”
