North Devon MP Nick Harvey and Council Leader Brian Greenslade have made the case to Lib Dem chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander for improvements to the North Devon Link Road.

Devon County Council are currently consulting on proposed improvements to the road, which Mr Harvey and Mr Greenslade believe are vital to ease congestion and improve safety.

Mr Harvey said: “We were delighted to get the chance to put the case for improvements to the North Devon Link Road to Danny Alexander, and to explain their importance to the North Devon economy. It was encouraging that he entirely got the point, and he agreed to take the project away and see what can be done to help move it forward.

“With the Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin having agreed that tackling pinch-points is the most realistic way to improve the road, this new project is beginning to get onto Whitehall’s radar.”

North Devon Council leader Brian Greenslade said: “Late last year we were able to lobby the Business Secretary Vince Cable as well so this means two senior members of the Cabinet have now been briefed about the improvements the A361/A39 needs.

“Danny Alexander understood the connectivity needs of Northern Devon and its connection to North Cornwall and promised to do what he could to help us push forward with the improvements the North Devon Link Road needs.”
