Mother flipped car into a field taking children to school

South Molton woman punished by magistrates for ‘bad mistake’

A SOUTH Molton woman who rolled her car when driving her children to school has been given nine points on her driving licence.

North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard that Rachael Jane Govier, 41, of Mariansleigh lost control of her car when attempting to overtake on the B3137 at Alswear, on the way to South Molton, at 8.10am on February 11.

Govier and her three children all managed to safely get out of the car.

The driver of the car which Govier attempted to overtake said she was travelling at 55mph, and was ‘surprised’ to see a car coming up along side of her.

She then recalled seeing the black Ford Mondeo ‘jolt towards me before veering right into a field’.

The car then turned over and landed on its roof, the court heard.

The accident was further aggravated by the facts that Govier was not insured to drive the car, which belonged to her husband, and three of the car’s tyres had less than 1.6mm of tread on them.

Defending herself, Govier said she needed to get her children to school, some seven miles away, and that she would have used another car, but that was in the garage at the time.

“Obviously it was bad judgement and a bad mistake,” she said. “I’m sorry for taking the car and I didn’t mean to do it.”

After hearing that Govier needed to be able to drive due to one her children’s asthma, sitting magistrate Mr Buckley decided not to disqualify her from driving.

He did, however, hand her nine penalty points on her licence and order her to pay a total of £215 in fines and costs.
