Young Barnstaple healthcare assistant is named overall winner of the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust Healthcare Heroes Awards 2014.
THE kindness, compassion and dedication of a young Barnstaple healthcare assistant has seen him named as the region’s Healthcare Hero for 2014.
Martin Padmore, 24, beat 30 other nominees to take the winner’s trophy during Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust’s awards ceremony at North Devon District Hospital on Thursday.
The awards are run in association with the North Devon Gazette, and we chose Martin, who works on Glossop Ward at the hospital, as the Northern Devon area winner and then the trust board picked him as overall winner.
Martin, who is getting married in the autumn, also won a pre or post-wedding photoshoot for him and his fiancée and young son with Andy Casey Photography.
“We received so many fantastic nominations and the board members were particularly touched by the heart-warming comments about Martin,” said trust chairman Roger French, who led the awards
“While his nominations were full of praise for the care received from the whole team at NDDH, it is clear that Martin stood out.
“Words such as kind, caring, compassionate, understanding, supportive and dedicated were a recurring theme in his nominations.”
Martin, who joined the trust as a healthcare assistant on Alex ward in December 2011 and moved to Glossop in the autumn last year, modestly admitted he was surprised to win:
“I just expected to get a certificate the same as everyone else, so I was shocked more than anything,” he said.
“I want to say thank you to everyone who nominated me. It’s just unfortunate that everyone can’t be nominated, because we all just do our best. The team I work with is fairly new to me, but they all work so hard.”
Martin greatly enjoys his job and clearly has a good rapport with his patients. Roger French added: “He truly epitomises the trust’s values of demonstrating compassion, striving for excellence, respecting diversity, acting with integrity and listening and supporting others, and we are delighted to have Martin as our Healthcare Hero.”
The awards were promoted and nominations collected by the North Devon Gazette as well as our sister Archant papers in East Devon plus the Mid Devon Gazette series.
Harriet Nicholls, a community nurse based in Ottery St Mary, was named Eastern Devon’s Healthcare Hero.
Mid Devon’s Healthcare Hero is Mandy Harper, a healthcare assistant at Tiverton and District Hospital.
A further 21 staff were commended and seven were highly commended.
