Ceremony will take place with march through the town and flag raising at Victoria Park on Monday, June 23.

THE Military Wives Choir will be making a guest appearance at Bideford’s Armed Forces Day ceremony on Monday, June 23.

The event, jointly organised by Torridge District Council and Bideford Town Council will see a military parade along the Quay followed by a flag raising in Victoria Park.

Torridge will be joining in with others across the country in showing support for the military community, both serving and retired, at home and abroad, by flying the Armed Forces Flag for the whole week.

A number of local organisations and veterans have been invited to join in the parade being led by the Tarka Pipe Band, including the Royal British Legion, the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Brownies and members of the Royal Marine Association.

Bideford Town Band will be playing, and providing a bugler and the Military Wives Choir will be performing a number of songs.

Councillor Peter Christie, chairman of Torridge District Council, said: “The event is being held to mark the contribution of our Armed Forces to the life and well-being of the nation.

“Many have passed through the ranks – from veterans to cadets – and many are still serving and in this year of two important anniversaries, the centenary of the start of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, the nation is more aware than ever of what they have done for us.

“Perhaps we are guilty of taking them for granted, so this event is an opportunity to show our respect for what they have done and what they are still doing one small way of saying ‘thank you’ for all they do.”

The parade will commence at 6.30pm from outside the Lundy Office on Bideford Quay, and will march through to Victoria Park where the flag raising ceremony will take place.
