Bideford Town Council agrees to fund benches and approach families of late councillors about placing memorial plaques on them.

BIDEFORD Town Council has voted to erect two benches in Manteo Way in memory of two late councillors – but ask the families to supply memorial plaques.

Councillor Mervyn Langmead suggested the benches be put up in memory of Cllr Steve Clarke OBE and former Cllr Brian Lacey.

He said: “Both of those councillors worked extremely hard for the people of East-the-Water and Bideford.

“Manteo Way is an area where they, especially Brian, would walk and talk to people.

“It’s a very long stretch and people have said they would appreciate some benches going up there to help them rest while carrying their shopping.”

But other councillors feared this would set a precedent and if they erected benches now they would have to put more up for others.

“It has always been that councillors did not reward themselves for they did for the town – there reward was all around them,” said Cllr Anne Brenton.

Cllr Peter Christie suggested: “Let’s buy two benches without plaques. We will know who they are for, and if the families want to a plaque on them, they can.”

Councillors voted unanimously to supply the benches and approach the families of the two late councillors to ask if they wished to supply a memorial plaque.
