GENEROUS Sainsbury’s shoppers have raised more than £10,000 for Royal Marines charities – in just one week.

Customers donated spare cash as local servicemen and women pounded exercise bikes during a 9,000km static cycle at the Roundswell store.

Marines from Commando Logistic, 11 ATT- Instow and the Royal Marines Association (RMA) North Devon cycled 12-hours a day and covered the distance equivalent to Gibraltar and back during the week.

John Peel, chairman, RMA North Devon said: “We bashed ourselves to bits for 80 hours and the North Devon public were massively generous.

“Every single penny collected will go to the Royal Marine Charitable Trust Fund where it will be distributed to a number of Royal Marine charities to help those families who need that extra support.

“Sainsbury’s were also hugely supportive of Royal Marines and Royal Marines charities. The store allowed us to fundraise in the foyer for the fourth year and the manager said there was a real buzz in the store during the week.”
