The 48-year-old was found sleeping in his car which he had driven with no licence or insurance.

A MAN who had ‘never smoked cannabis in his life’ was found in possession of the drug when police discovered him sleeping in his car.

Andrew Collins, 48, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to possession as well as driving without insurance and not in accordance with a licence.

After splitting from his long term partner, Collins took the car despite having no driving licence and was found by police sleeping in it in a lay by on January 14.

He told officers he did not have a driving licence because he ‘could not afford one’.

Jen Law, defending, said Collins had never smoked cannabis despite being found with £10 worth of the drug, but did have a problem with alcohol.

“Since he was arrested he hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol,” she said.

Magistrates said they were pleased to see Collins had taken steps to help himself.

They disqualified him from driving for 12 months and imposed two conditional discharges to run alongside each other for 12 months.
