Police were stunned to find a man with a badly broken leg in an Ilfracombe street after he apparently fell from a second floor window.

Officers were called to reports of a disturbance in an address in Church Terrace just after midnight on June 29 and found the 49-year-old on the pavement outside.

At the time a 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He has since been released without charge and the police are not pursuing any further criminal allegations.

A police spokesman said the man was fortunate to have only sustained a broken leg after a fall of as much as 30 feet.

They believe the man had climbed from the window following an argument but had not appreciated how high it was.
