A MAN was airlifed to hospital yesterday (Sun) afternoon after jumping off the Taw Bridge in Barnstaple.

Police were called to the scene just after 11.20am after the man, believed to be in his 20s, jumped from the bridge.

He was discovered stuck in the mud with serious injuries and was brought to the river bank by fire fighters, paramedics and police officers.

Colin Mills, station manager at Bideford fire station, said a specialist rescue team in dry suits were called to the scene to assist in the rescue.

Fire fighters, assisted by a paramedic, took around 40 minutes to rescue the man from the centre of the river bed.

He said: “The tide was out at the time so luckily it wasn’t a time critical rescue.”

The Devon air ambulance landed on the Tarka Trail and airlifted the man, who was said to be ‘conscious and talking’ to Derriford Hospital.

A police spokesman said the man had serious injuries and was currently in the major trauma unit.
