Several punishments for Braunton man at North Devon Magistrates’ Court

A Braunton man accidentally reversed his friend’s car into another parked car while searching for his mobile phone, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday.

A witness saw Daniel Paul Gammon, 23, of South View, Braunton reverse about 10 yards into the rear of a parked Mazda Bongo in the village hall car park in Croyde at just after eight o’clock on September 4.

The witness then told Gammon they were going to call the police, which led to him leaving the scene.

Laurence Overend, for the defence, said that Gammon had ‘panicked’ and that he did walk into the police station two days later to be interviewed voluntarily.

Gammon claimed to have accidentally put the car into reverse after turning on the engine in order to use the car’s inside light in an attempt to find his phone. He had his friend’s consent to search the car.

He was ordered to pay £435 in fines and charges and received six penalty points on his driving license, as well as two endorsements, after pleading guilty to charges of failing to stop after a road accident, driving not in accordance with his license and driving without insurance.
