The 20-year-old from London told magistrates he was driven to Barnstaple and made to cash fraudulent cheques using fake documents.

A YOUNG man from London who cashed cheques totalling £1,470 at three shops in Barnstaple and Exeter claimed he did so ‘under duress’.

Roshan Vyse, 20, of Drayton Green, London, pleaded guilty to the three charges of fraud by false representation on December 14.

Vyse had cashed in the cheques worth £490 each at The Money Centre in Bear Street, Cash Brokers in Boutport Street and Cash Converters in Exeter.

The court heard he was picked up by a group of men he did not know after they turned up at his house, making ‘veiled threats’ towards him.

“He said they drove him from London to the South West, where he was given false documents and told to learn a cover story,” said prosecutor Lyndsey Baker.

“He went into the stores and did what they told him to; he then walked back to the car and gave them the cash.”

The men drove him between the stores, before dropping him at Bristol Temple Meads train station with £35 to catch a train back to London.

Zara Svensson, defending, said the men had made contact with Vyse through a group of people who had been bullying him and smashed windows at his home.

“He was very scared but he did this because the men promised him there would be no further bullying, and no further contact from them either.”

Magistrates sentenced Vyse, who is currently unemployed, to 200 hours of unpaid work and ordered him to pay £220 to each store.
