Prosecutor called it a ‘spot of bad luck’ that the young man was caught with the drug after a neighbour reported the alarm sounding in his house.

A YOUNG man was caught with 55.1g of cannabis after police arrived at his home to investigate when his burglar alarm went off by accident, magistrates heard today (Fri).

Jules McHugh, 20, had been trying to turn the alarm off when officers alerted by a neighbour arrived at his house in what prosecutor Mark Haddow called a ‘spot of bad luck’ for the defendant on November 2.

Officers found McHugh in the property at 20 Stoat Park, Barnstaple, which he explained was his own, but smelt cannabis and spotted various pieces of paraphernalia lying around.

McHugh straight away admitted the drugs were his before voluntarily leading officers to his car where they found a 37g bag of cannabis.

He told officers it was cheaper to buy in bulk for his own personal use and despite them finding several phones which were investigated they found no evidence to suggest he was dealing.

Rod Ball, defending, told magistrates McHugh had installed the burglar alarm after a previous property he had been living in was burgled.

He said the 20-year-old, who had no previous convictions, was studying plastering at Petroc, hoping to gain an NVQ in property maintenance.

McHugh pleaded guilty to possessing the cannabis at North Devon Magistrates’ Court and was given a conditional discharge for six months and ordered him to pay £40 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
