Taw Bridge has reopened following police incident.

A MAN has been airlifted to hospital after being pulled from the River Taw in Barnstaple this afternoon (Friday).

The man, believed to be in his 30s, fell into shallow water from the Taw Bridge, shortly after 2pm.

Police received several calls from the public with concerns for the man’s welfare but officers arriving at the scene found the man already in the water.

A spokesperson said: “Officers recovered the man and managed to pull him onto a sandbank and start CPR.

“Paramedics took over before the casualty was airlifted to North Devon District Hospital.

“His condition is unknown at this time.”

The bridge was closed to traffic but reopened at 2.30pm
