MALCOLM Wilkinson has been elected as the new chairman of North Devon Council.

Councillor Wilkinson, who was vice-chairman to Cllr Geoff Fowler last year, takes the reins for 2014/15 with Cllr Brian Hockin taking over vice-chairman duties.

Outgoing chairman Cllr Fowler said in a speech to council on Wednesday: “I’ve had a great year and I hope I’ve been a good ambassador for the area.

“We’ve got a very good name here in North Devon from what I hear around the county.

“The important thing is we have worked together and if we’re going to survive as a council in the future we’ve got to continue to work together.”

Cllr Fowler offered his thanks to everyone who had helped him during his year in office, before council leader Brian Greenslade added his thanks.

“I would like to thank you very much for all you’ve done as our leading citizen with your usual quiet but popular appeal,” he said.

“I’m sure there is much else you can contribute to public life in North Devon.”

Cllr Greenslade proposed that Cllr Wilkinson be named the new chairman, a motion which the council voted overwhelmingly in favour of.

“I can assure you I will work over the next year to justify this position,” said Cllr Wilkinson.

“It is really special representing an area as unique and beautiful as North Devon.

“I ask you as councillors to not lose sight of why we are here: to represent the electorate of North Devon and promote the area.”
