PARTICIPATE in purple power this Friday as the Big Purple Day returns to raise money for the Chemotherapy Appeal.

Now in its third year, the appeal’s dedicated fundraising day in association with the North Devon Gazette invites everyone to pull on purple apparel, bake purple cakes or even paint themselves purple to help the new chemo unit appeal reach its £2.2million target.

It is looking set to be bigger, better and more mauve than ever this year, with numerous North Devon businesses taking part, including the Big Sheep, Barnstaple McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, Curry’s Poundstretcher, Costa Coffee, Brewer, Harding and Rowe, Parkside Barnstaple, Santander, Nationwide and Lloyds.

Top yak

To launch this year’s Purple Day with a splash, Combe Martin-based 3 Wiggle Adventures is running an online auction for a brand new – and purple – FatYak Kaafu kayak, with all proceeds going to the appeal.

Other businesses, schools, community groups and anyone who wants to take part still have time to put their purple thinking caps on and get fundraising.

Mauve molluscs...

As long as there is purple involved somewhere, the world is your mauve mollusc – wear purple in return for a donation, make a cake, hold a raffle, sponsored walk or bike ride, or simply collect a few pounds from friends, family and colleagues.

Mark Thorp and Nellie Guttman of 3 Wiggle Adventures were especially keen to help the appeal after a very close friend was diagnosed with cancer less than three months ago. See below on how the ‘purple yak’ could be yours…

Four candles? Or more...

Back on dry land, at the Gazette offices in Old Station Road, staff will be having a purple dress down day in return for a donation; there will be cakes for sale at our reception, together with some fantastic purple candles courtesy of Mandie’s Candles. Purple war paint and more mauve madness will be on offer too…

Staff and volunteers at North Devon District Hospital will be going for it big time, with numerous departments dressing in purple (where clinical duties permit) plus there is a Big Purple Day raffle. Tickets are available in the foyer and there are hampers, teddy bears and a hand-crafted handbag as prizes.

Drivers of Stagecoach service 19 serving NDDH - sporting distinctive purple Chemo Appeal t-shirts and collecting from passengers, as will staff at Barnstaple bus station.

Get the t-shirt

Purple t-shirts, balloons and collection tins or buckets are available from the fundraising team at NDDH, so if you have an idea for a Big Purple Day event, call Julie Whitton of the fundraising team on 01271 311772, email ndht.charity@nhs.net or visit www.northdevonhealth.nhs.uk/fundraising.

* We’d also love to hear about any purple plans you have, so we can preview than and photographers can drop in on the day. Call the news desk on 01271 345056 or email tony.gussin@archant.co.uk

The 3 Wiggle Adventures FatYak Kaafu kayak charity auction will run from July 9 until August 1. To submit your bid, go to www.3wiggleadventures.co.uk or call 07947 716721. The winning bid and total will be announced after August 1.
