Shopping centre bosses hopeful of deal being signed off soon.

THERE are high hopes that a ‘major’ retailer could soon be opening shop in Barnstaple’s Green Lanes Shopping Centre.

The Gazette understands that a deal to bring a new store to the town – widely expected to be a TK Maxx – is nearing completion.

Plans for a new retail unit at Green Lanes – including artist’s impressions bearing TK Maxx signs – were given full planning approval by North Devon Council in August last year.

The new store would occupy part of the existing shopping centre, as well as a new site at 22 and 23 Joy Street following the demolition of unsafe buildings last year.

Despite the detailed planning drawings, TK Maxx has continued to play down reports that it had set its sights on the town.

This week, a spokesperson for the discount fashion retailer told the Gazette it did not have ‘any confirmed plans to open in Barnstaple’.

Shopping centre bosses were also unable to confirm the company’s interest, but did say they were optimistic of a deal being signed with a ‘major retailer’.

Green Lanes manager Jan Dayman said: “We are hopeful that something will be signed off soon so that we can let everyone know what’s happening.

“There are currently six empty units in the shopping centre of varying sizes and if we can get a big retailer in, it would create interest and hopefully encourage the rest to follow.

“It’s a difficult time of year but we have had some interest in a couple of the units and are waiting to hear back from the companies involved.

“As soon as we hear more we will let everyone know as we are keen to get things moving,” she added.
