LUNDY Island celebrated this week after officially becoming the UK’s newest Church of England parish.

The island was formally part of the parish of Hartland Coast, but islanders and the then rural dean applied for the remote island and it’s only church, St Helens, to be recognised in its own right.

To celebrate, the Reverend Shirley Henderson from Hartland was flown over to the island for the day in the RAF Sea King to take a special service.

Derek Green, Lundy general manager, said it was a historic day for Lundy and its church.

He said: “It takes a lot of determination and expense to build anything on Lundy, so to think about building a full size church here in such a remote and exposed location in 1896 is testament to the Reverend Hudson Heaven who owned the island at the time.

“St Helens is a beautiful church and thoroughly deserves its status as parish church.”

Shirley added: “We’re delighted with the creation of the new parish of Lundy.

“St Helens is a beacon on the horizon and dominates the skyline as you approach the island.”
