Ilfracombe Round Table’s popular charity event at the pier returns after a year out with a 30 foot flight plus a proposal of marriage...

PLUNGING proposals, fliers and belly-floppers all ensured the crowds had a great time at Southwest Birdman in Ilfracombe on Sunday.

A day of live music, stalls and entertainment on the pier organised by Ilfracombe Round Table was capped by the sight of would-be bird people leaping into the briny for charity.

Profits from the event will go towards helping to buy new equipment for Ilfracombe play parks.

Paul Crabb of the Round Table said it had been a very successful day, with the longest ‘flight’ standing at 11.1 metres for the St James Dairy entry of ‘Team Jet’, which also raised £500 in sponsorship, half of which will go to Belle’s Memorial Fund in memory of youth worker Christi Kelly who died earlier this year.

“The most popular entrant as decided by our highly technical crowd ‘clap-o-meter’ was a close run between the Amazing Transforming Truck by Atlas Packaging or ‘propose-to-your-missus-on-the-jump-platform’ by Leo Cooper and Chani Turner,” he said.

As the crowd looked on, Leo got down on one knee to make his proposals to Chani – who happily said yes – before the couple leapt into the sea.

“We would like to thank main sponsor PVF Installations, Ilfracombe Sea Safari and everyone else who contributed and helped out, without whom the event couldn’t have gone ahead,” added Paul.
