Appledore lifeboats plus the Chivenor Seaking search and rescue helicopter comb the coast after reports of a surfer lost in the fog.

APPLEDORE’S inshore lifeboat was launched yesterday (Thursday) morning to search for a surfer believed lost in the fog.

The alarm was raised at 11am when it was thought the surfer had become disorientated in the fog somewhere between the north end of Croyde Beach and Baggy Point.

Following a tricky search in visibility of less than 30 metres at times, nothing was found by the RNLI crew and it is believed the surfer made it ashore unaided.

The Appledore RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched first, along with the Croyde coastguard team and a helicopter from RMB Chivenor. With the visibility down to less than 30 metres it was then decided to also launch the all-weather lifeboat.

After several hours searching nothing was found and the lifeboat crew volunteers returned to station at 1.30pm.

Martin Cox is the RNLI coxswain at Appledore: “You should never hesitate to call 999 if you think someone is in trouble on or in the water.

“In this case we believe the surfer made it ashore unaided but at least we were able to check the area out. It wasn’t easy because of the very thick fog, which at times meant the visibility was down to less than 30 metres but it was a good training exercise in taxing conditions.”
