THE leader of North Devon Council says it is now ‘critical’ that the North Devon and Torridge joint local plan is completed soon.

Once completed and adopted, the local plan will set out the vision, objectives and policies for delivering development across northern Devon until 2031.

North Devon Council and Torridge hope to put the plan to consultation shortly after Easter, with the aim of putting it before the secretary of state in the summer.

To date, a number of plans put forwards by other local authorities have been rejected for a number of reasons – something NDC’s Cllr Mike Edmonds is keen to avoid in northern Devon.

“I went to meet the chief inspector to find out why so many local plans are failing,” he said.

Cllr Edmonds cited a lack of housing provision, a duty to cooperate and take on houses from neighbouring areas and out of date information being submitted as the main reasons for other authorities failing.

He did concede that not having an official policy for gypsies and travellers could be a ‘potential problem’, but added that: “Compared to other local authorities, we have not got the same problems.

“I’m confident now that I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

“I know it’s slow but things are happening and it is important that we get it right first time.”
