Link Road littering is still bad

Unusual items discovered among two tonnes of rubbish discarded by ‘lazy drivers’ during North Devon Link Road litter blitz...

FAST FOOD wrappers, a mattress and underpants were among the items found as North Devon Council’s annual litter blitz revealed drivers are still rubbishing the Link Road.

During the course of this year’s clean-up, 218 bags of rubbish were collected, weighing in at 2.2 tonnes – less than last year but still not considered good enough.

“Even though the amount of collected rubbish was lower than previous years, it’s still too much,” said executive member for environment, Councillor Rodney Cann.

“There really is no excuse for throwing litter from cars - this laziness not only makes the district look untidy, it costs the tax payer a lot of money to clean up.

The council said most waste was made up of fast food wrappers but crews also found more unusual dumped items, including a mattress, quilt and underpants.

This year the council teamed up with local McDonald’s franchise owner, David Hunt, who helped sponsor the clean up, now in its eighth year.

“It’s disappointing much of the litter along the Link Road is food packaging,” he said.

“Our district is such a green and beautiful place, it’s a shame that it’s being spoiled by an inconsiderate few. We all have a social responsibility for keeping North Devon clean, so as well as supporting the Link Road clean-up this year and sponsoring bins, our staff carry out regular litter picks around our outlets.”
