Winter storms have changed the face of many coastal locations and visitors have been urged by the RNLI to heed any warnings or safety advice.

EASTER beach goers in North Devon have been warned to be aware how much the coast has changed since the winter storms.

RNLI Lifeguards have been patrolling Croyde and Woolacombe during the school holidays and will be on the beaches through to Monday this Easter weekend.

But the charity has warned visitors the make up of beaches may have been changed drastically by the storms and they could be surprised at how different everything looks. Speaking about the UK in general, lifeguard manager Brett Shepherd said: “In places, sand dunes have been washed away leaving sheer sand cliffs.

“On other beaches, access points to and from the beach have changed whilst shifting sand has left deep channels that in turn create strong rip currents.

“We’d urge anyone planning on visiting a beach over the Easter holidays to check local information in advance and head to a lifeguarded beach.

“Swimmers should ensure that they swim between the red and yellow flags, which mark out the safest area to swim and are patrolled by lifeguards. Please take heed of the safety signage and any advice offered by the lifeguards on duty.

“By highlighting the dangers before visitors arrive, we hope that we can avoid potential incidents and everyone can enjoy their time on the beach in safety.”
