Learner taken to hospital after car goes down embankment near Barnstaple

Fire crews cut victim free after A39 crash on Thursday evening.

A learner driver was taken to hospital last night (Thursday) after the car she was driving plunged down an embankment on the A39 near Barnstaple.

Fire crews had to cut the roof off the Vauxhall Astra to free her after the incident on the A39 Shirwell road at Burridge and she was taken to North Devon District Hospital by ambulance.

Police said the driver had suspected back injuries, though it is believed neither her nor her passenger were seriously injured.

The crash happened just before 7pm, closing the road, which was reopened again at around 8.30pm.

Three fire crews were in attendance, two from Barnstaple and another from Braunton.

The road surface has just been dressed with loose chippings, but it is unclear whether this contributed to the accident.
