The first North Devon foundation law degree courses will begin this September.

PETROC has been given the go ahead to run new law degree courses at its North Devon campus.

The Foundation Degree in Law will be available from September and will be run in conjunction with the University of Plymouth.

It will be the first of its kind in North Devon, meaning those wanting to study law at degree level will no longer have to leave the area to begin their studies.

The FdSc Law programme will also incorporate business units, and has been specifically designed for those planning to go into the legal or business world.

It will give students the opportunity to study subjects such as contract, tort, family law, European Union law, and an introduction to land and criminal law, as well as traditional business modules such as human resources, finance and organisational structure.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer this degree and have had a lot of interest from students already, as there is nothing like this on offer round here at the moment,” said law lecturer Frances Green.

“The skills are transferable and can be applied to a wide range of careers within the legal and business world. It is ideally suited to those thinking about working in the legal department of a large organisation or perhaps as a legal executive.

“It would also be perfect for someone who owns their own company, or is responsible for a wide range of roles within a business.”

Students will also have the chance to visit court, learn how to complete court papers plus hone interview and presentation skills. It is not a qualifying law degree and anyone who wanted to pursue a career as a solicitor or barrister would need to do an additional year before the vocational courses.

Anyone interested in the course is invited to call the Higher Education office on 01271 852365 or visit www.petroc.ac.uk/lawdegree for more information.
