IF you know an unsung hero working for the NHS, there’s still six more days to nominate them for a Healthcare Hero Award.

Cheri Matthews, a senior sister in the emergency department at North Devon District Hospital, has received several nominations from colleagues this week.

Aimee Matthews de Menezes, a staff nurse in the department, said you couldn’t ask for a better role model than Cheri.

She said: “She is an inspiring representative of the nursing profession who tirelessly offers her expertise to others.”

Staff nurse Sarah Hill also nominated Cheri, and said she often goes ‘above and beyond’ in pursuit of ‘exceptional nursing care’.

“To top it all off she is an amazing and inspiring person who is simply a pleasure to know,” she said.

Another sister nominated for an award this week is Angela Walter, who works on Capener ward at NDDH.

Co-worker Karen Reeves said if there was such a thing as a perfect manager, Angela would be pretty close.

She said: “It’s hard to put into words how much she affects our working lives; how she makes us laugh with her ‘quote of the month’ hung up in our staff toilet or the countless sticky note messages she leaves us.

“If my family or indeed myself were a patient in this hospital I would want Angela to be the one caring for them/me.”

Another unsung hero nominated by her colleague is Lorna Roberts, a specialist physiotherapist in outpatient physiotherapy at NDDH.

Luke Squire, who works in the same department, said Lorna always went the ‘extra mile’ with her patients and team mates.

He said: “She always does her utmost to help others – both patients and staff. I feel she should be praised for the work she does as she is a great member of staff.”

Alison Latham, a speech and language therapy technician at Barnstaple Health Centre was nominated by colleague Beverly Snowdon.

Beverly said: “She has been a main driver in helping us to get a good selection of communication aids so that patients who have progressive neurological diseases have the opportunity to communicate even if they can’t talk.”
