Overwhelming majority vote in favour of retaining in-patient beds.

PEOPLE in Torrington have voted overwhelmingly in favour of retaining in-patient beds at the town’s community hospital.

More than a thousand went to the polls yesterday (Wednesday) to take part in a referendum organised by campaign group Save Torrington’s Irreplaceable Torrington Cottage Hospital (STITCH).

Of the 1,393 who voted – a turnout of 32.6 per cent – 1,380 voted to keep the 10 overnight beds, while just 12 said the beds should go.

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group are reviewing the future role of the hospital, which could become a hub for a range of outpatient clinics.

They say data collected during an eight-week pilot last year showed the proposed model of care to be safe, effective and what patients wanted.

The results of the referendum will be sent to the CCG and healthcare trust.

  • It's hardly surprising that the no vote was so low. It would have been a brave Torritonian that walked past the cameras and STITCH members that were all over the voting venues. God help anyone in the Town that has dared to express any opinion that wasn't STITCHs.
