Proposal for tidal lagoon floated at North Devon Council meeting

A PROPOSAL to build a lucrative tidal lagoon off the local coast will be referred to North Devon Council’s Executive.

As revealed in this week’s Gazette, Councillor Malcolm Wilkinson gave a notice of motion at Wednesday’s full council meeting, asking ‘that the council consider the environmental and economic regeneration opportunities that might be achieved if a tidal lagoon system similar to that proposed at Swansea were developed on the North Devon coast’.

The scheme in Swansea is estimated to generate enough renewable power to run 120,000 homes and £2.3billion over the next 40 years.

At Wednesday’s meeting, Cllr Wilkinson said: “My stand on the withdrawn application for the Atlantic Array was clear – I was against that for many reasons, but we cannot close our eyes to the need for clean, renewable energy.

“If we don’t look into these possibilities I think we are doing a disservice to our electorate.”

Cllr Wilkinson asked that the plan be discussed by the Executive, which received widespread support from councillors.
