NORTH Devon Labour Party has selected Mark Cann to be their candidate to fight the next general election, planned for 2015.

Mr Cann, 62, from Braunton, was chosen by local Labour party members at a hustings meeting held in Barnstaple Guildhall on Tuesday.

He has previously contested the North Devon seat for Labour in both 2005 and 2010.

Mr Cann said the next election would present ‘a real opportunity’ for Labour to make progress in North Devon.

He said: “So many voters feel let down by the Liberal Democrats. They say to voters that only they can beat the Conservatives here, yet we end up with a Liberal Democrat MP who helped put the Tories into power.

“Labour’s message is as relevant here as anywhere. In North Devon we have some of the lowest wages in the country and our young people are desperate for jobs and a decent home.

“Labour will promote a Living Wage for all, will build more homes to meet housing needs and guarantee young people, out of work for a year, a job and the training they need.”

Mr Cann, a retired political studies teacher, served as a district and town councillor in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, near where he taught for more than 30 years.

He currently helps with the organisation of the Glastonbury Festival with which he has been involved since 1981.

He said his main interests outside politics were playing golf and following Crystal Palace FC.
