New loving homes needed for a ‘cat-scade’ of kittens at Barnstaple and District Cats Protection.

A CASCADE of kittens is threatening to inundate Barnstaple Cats Protection.

The charity is appealing for people to come forward and adopt a kitten to help ease the strain on its limited resources.

“Despite the bad weather we’ve had this year it hasn’t stopped cats from breeding,” said Sue Carder at the charity.

“Although we are only a small branch with six fosterers, we have already homed 86 kittens this year compared to 78 at this time last year, and 62 from 2010 - and still they keep coming in!”

So far this year ravenous kittens have munched through around 4,200 pouches of kitten food plus biscuits and countless bags of cat litter have been deployed.

“This year we seem to have had more stray or farm kittens handed in and many of these have not been socialised so tend to spend longer in our care taking up pens and slowing our homing,” continued Sue.

“Kittens need to be handled as much as possible between two and eight weeks otherwise they become fearful of humans.

“We still have several kittens looking for a home and many of these are more timid as the bold and outgoing kittens are the first to be chosen.

“Although our fosterers spend as much time as possible with them, what they really need is to be in a home environment where they can receive constant attention and learn to trust humans.”
