Extreme sports enthusiast washed up on rocks in huge swell at Saunton.
A KITE surfer was airlifted to hospital after getting into difficulty in rough seas off the North Devon coast today (Wednesday).
The 63-year-old was taken to North Devon District Hospital with cuts and bruises after becoming washed up on rocks at Saunton Sands.
Swansea Coastguard scrambled the search and rescue helicopter from nearby Chivenor after being alerted by a member of the public.
The Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team helped to secure a helicopter landing zone on the beach.
Rough seas, coupled with southerly gale force winds and 8ft surf made for challenging conditions in the water.
Swansea Coastguard watch manager David Jones said: “Coastguard warns water sports enthusiasts to always check conditions and tides before setting off.
“Don’t go alone and always wear a personal flotation device. Wear bright clothing which will help you be located if you get into difficulty.”
