A FIRE broke out in a brand new bar in Braunton on Sunday – less than 24 hours after it opened its doors for the first time.

SQ Bar opened in the former Natwest Bank on Saturday evening, after a full refurbishment which has seen scaffolding surround the building for months.

But on Sunday afternoon three fire crews were scrambled to the establishment on Exeter Road after a fire broke out in the kitchen.

A member of staff had to be treated for minor burns to the hand after a fire involving a gas cooking range, griddle and fats.

Three fire crews from Barnstaple and Ilfracombe arrived shortly after 3.35pm to find the fire was already out and checked for any spread of the flames.

The bar, which has a restaurant and roof terrace, offers a range of British cuisine.

  • I feel really disappointed by this article. Do we not think this is a bit of a negative slant on the opening weekend of a great new business venture for the area? Why is it the media are so very keen to highlight small blips or teething problems but never appear to focus on the positives? I think it is such a shame that there is no mention of what a great success the opening night was? Or how many local people turned out in support or what a fantastic new place it is for Braunton? The place itself it beautifully finished, reasonable priced and a great place for people to visit. It was a fantastic weekend regarding the weather and for the many events that took place over the weekend – wouldn’t we all prefer to carry on that feel good factor into Monday?
