Plans for a ‘caretaker operator’ to get both theatres up and running again by April

The keys of North Devon’s theatres have been handed back to the council.

Administrator Bishop Fleming LLP announced today (Monday) the leases of the Queens Theatre in Barnstaple and the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe had been surrendered to North Devon Council (NDC).

The council received the keys back this morning and is now looking at bringing in a caretaker operator with the aim of getting both theatres back up and running in April.

Then the council will hold a tendering process to recruit a new operator for the longer term.

The council has also bought assets from the administrator that belonged to the former North Devon Theatres Trust and were not part of the leases.

The cost of these fixtures and fittings was £24,000, which the administrator said was more than it could have realised for them via an auction.

The administrator said all the theatres’ assets were ‘intact and on site’.

North Devon Council will be holding a press call on Wednesday morning, to talk about the situation in more detail.
