Mr Abrahams celebrated at town council’s annual meeting

A BARNSTAPLE man who has donated upwards of £2million to local causes has been named an Honorary Burgess of the town.

Keith Abraham, 85, was handed an illuminated scroll at Barnstaple Town Council’s annual meeting on Monday.

Mr Abraham had donated just over £1million up to 2007, and has since heavily involved in Barnstaple in Bloom and backed a number of local sports clubs, including a golf club, rugby club and gig rowing club.

He has also donated to North Devon Hospice.

A former colleague praised Mr Abraham’s impact on the town at Monday night’s meeting.

“A lot of that money has been used to bring more money into North Devon and that is so important,” he said. “Vision is a word that I think goes well with Keith.

“He told me he loves Barnstaple. Well, you’re one in a million and Barnstaple loves you.”

Mr Abraham said he was ‘humbled’ by the recognition.

“I came to this town a humble chap and took over a business that was going under and never looked back,” he said.

“I’m very humbled – it’s a shame my late wife isn’t here to see it.

“You don’t look for these things. My spirit comes from seeing young people that give something to the town.”
