Bideford woman given conditional discharge for swallowing heroin during police search

A BIDEFORD woman was warned by a magistrate to ‘keep out of trouble’ after being given a conditional discharge for drug offences.

Josie Anne Dawson, 29, of Stella Maris Court appeared before North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with the possession of heroin and obstructing an officer in the execution of their duty.

Dawson swallowed an amount of diamorphine when police entered her friend’s house on a warrant, stopping the police from recovering the drugs, magistrates heard.

Dawson, representing herself, told magistrates she was not seeking help for her drug problem.

She was handed a 12 month conditional discharge, with a £15 victim surcharge waived in lieu of ‘time served’ at the courts.

But sitting magistrate Jilly Collins warned her to take the conviction seriously.

“If you keep getting into trouble you could end up in prison,” she said.
