Three men contact Swansea Coastguard and are picked up by Clovelly and Appledore RNLI lifeboats eight miles off the coast.

THREE kayakers were rescued yesterday (Saturday) morning eight miles off the North Devon coast after getting into difficulties during a 22 mile paddle from Ilfracombe to Lundy.

Swansea Coastguard received a mobile phone call from the three men at 8.25am who reported a double kayak had capsized.

Coastguards were able to get an approximate position from the weak phone signal and asked Appledore and Clovelly lifeboats to head to the scene.

The container vessel Endeavour also spotted the kayakers and stood by until Clovelly inshore lifeboat arrived and rescued the trio before meeting with Appledore all weather lifeboat to transfer them aboard.

They were taken back to shore and assessed by paramedics for hypothermia but fortunately did not need further medical attention.

HM Coastguard said its advice for kayakers in general was to always wear a buoyancy aid, check weather and tides, keep within their limits.

Ensure a good range of communications is on board if you need to raise the alarm because mobile phone and handheld VHF coverage can be limited when offshore. Carry flares, a PLB (personal locator beacon) and a GPS.
