THE iconic schooner the Kathleen and May will be involved in the filming of a Hollywood movie before setting sail for Bideford next month.

As revealed in the Gazette in March, the sole surviving three-masted topsail schooner will be making a homecoming trip towards the end of next month.

But first she will be chartered from Gloucester for a starring role in the 2016 release, Alice Through The Looking Glass, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Phil Clarke, son of the late Cllr Steve Clarke who bought the vessel in 1985, said it was a ‘very exciting time’ for the schooner, which is currently moored in Liverpool.

And there will be a chance to purchase some of the remaining relics of the Kathleen and May’s time in Bideford at an auction on Friday.

Lots at Torridge Auctions will include information boards from Brunswick Wharf, mooring ropes, life jackets, rugs and storage bins from the lower deck.

Linda Higgins, of Torridge Auctions, said she did not expect the exhibits would make ‘crazy money’ but would appeal to collectors.

“These will be great for those who have a real specialist interest in the Kathleen and May as they are a piece of history,” she said.

The auction house will be open from 9am on today (Thursday) at Torridge Auctions in Barnstaple Street, Bideford, with the sales beginning at 10am.
