Barnstaple photographer wins top award.

PATIENCE paid off for a Barnstaple wildlife photographer who has won a top award for his picture of a cuckoo.

Shaun Barrow was awarded the top adult prize in the third annual Julian Gardner Awards.

The competition is held by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) in memory of East Sussex man Julian Gardner, who was killed while protecting his property in 2010.

Amateur Shaun, who spends most of his weekends taking wildlife pictures on Exmoor, said he was ‘thrilled’ to win the award, judged by leading British wildlife photographer Laurie Campbell.

He said: “Sometimes you have to wait hours to get that perfect shot but occasionally you hit the jackpot and get really lucky such as the group of cuckoos that came into focus just as I aimed my camera.

“It was a thrilling moment and I am really delighted that it was so successful.”
