JSA claimants down by a third on 2013, figures show

Claimant count for February was slightly higher than January, however

THE number of people claiming Jobs Seekers Allowance in North Devon has dropped by almost a third since this time last year.

Figures show that 935 people claimed JSA in February 2014 – down from 1,366 in the same month of 2013.

However, February’s figures did show an increase of four people on January’s.

North Devon Council executive member for regeneration, Councillor Malcolm Prowse, is optimistic that the start of the spring season will see these numbers fall further in the coming months.

“Obviously any increase is disappointing, even though we know North Devon is very much a seasonal district,” he said. “However, with the tourist season about to start here, we are positive that the economy is showing signs of improvement, especially when we look back at this time last year.

“We will continue to support local growth wherever possible and hope that the year sees businesses thrive, with more sustainable jobs created.”

The latest claimant count figures were released days after RWE Innogy UK held an event for local businesses to find out about possible work contracts for the development of Batsworthy Cross wind farm.
