Bratton Fleming attraction celebrates Love Your Zoo Week with two new enclosures and a special visitor.
Johnny Kingdom has helped Exmoor Zoo celebrate Love Your Zoo Week by officially opening two new enclosures.
The ‘wildman of Exmoor’ joined zoo staff and visitors today (Sunday) to open the new areas at the Bratton Fleming attraction for squirrel monkeys and yellow-throated martens.
It coincides with the week-long campaign run by BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and there will be a variety of activities taking place at the zoo, including animal encounters, a prize trail and craft workshops.
“I love this zoo, I have been coming here for the last four or five years and every time I come there is another improvement,” said Johnny.
“The animals and the staff are always happy and it is always clean and well looked after, which we all know takes a lot of hard work every day.
“I have great pleasure in opening these new enclosures for the troop of squirrel monkeys and the Asian martens and I hope many more people come here and enjoy the zoo just like my family does every year.”
Throughout the week until Saturday, May 31 there will be something for everyone at Exmoor Zoo from face painting to learning about the importance of zoos and conservation, including a history of the zoo on display at the education centre.
“We have lots in store for a fun-filled Love Your Zoo week and we hope people will join us in celebrating the event which aims to highlight the important conservation role of zoos and aquariums,” said director Danny Reynolds.
“As an example more than 40 per cent of the animals we have on exhibit here are involved in breeding programmes to conserve that species and help protect them in the wild.”
