ILFRACOMBE’S annual Spring Clean has been hailed a great success but organisers have admitted they would have liked to see more volunteers help out.

Work crews from the One Ilfracombe Town Team have been out in force with organisations including the police, councillors, fire service and businesses to scrub up any grotspots, collect litter, remove graffiti and add a lick of paint where needed.

Co-ordinator Anne Thomas said it had been a busy week, with two beach cleans helped by the junior and infant schools, repainting benches at capstone, collecting old sandbags, hosing down unsightly corners and generally doing whatever they could.

“The Town Team have worked very well together, well supported by the police and fire brigade,” said Anne.

“There were very few volunteers from the public and really a lot of it just would not have happened without the co-operation of North Devon Council street team and Clive Denham, the Ilfracombe Town Council hygiene operative, who was an absolute star.

“The lack of support from the public was a little disheartening but we did have a very good week.”

The infants and some parents joined Ilfracombe Aquarium on Wednesday morning for a beach clean at the harbour, collecting an array of litter.

The aquarium team spent time with the pupils explaining the problem of beach litter and its impact on visitors and the marine environment.

A dog fouling patrol on Wednesday saw a successful day as the Town Team, police and volunteers spoke to more than 60 dog walkers.

The message was to encourage everyone to ensure dogs were under control, carry ‘pooper scooper’ bags, but also that those bags could be disposed of in ordinary litter bins.

Two more Ilfracombe PCSOs are now empowered to issue fixed penalty fines for anyone whose dog is caught fouling, and a new leaflet is being made available for people to report fouling incidents to the council.
