‘Report any suspicious behaviour’ say police after two cars burnt out and two others damaged in a single night.

POLICE have urged Ilfracombe residents to report any suspicious behaviour after two cars were burnt out and others vandalised in one night.

Inspector Roger Bartlett said the overnight crimes on June 23-24 were very unusual for the town and it was possible they were linked.

One car was taken from Granville Road and found burnt out in Oxford Grove car park, while another was burnt out by the museum in Wilder Road.

On the same evening, two others parked at Marine Drive were also damaged – a Land Rover with its rear windscreen smashed and a Cavalier had two of its doors bent open. One of these belonged to holidaymakers.

Insp Bartlett said the arson at Oxford Grove was reported at 4.43am and at about the same time two youths aged around 13 were seen in the area.

A group of youths were also seen in the bus station car park at about 1.30am acting suspiciously and again at the top of Marine Drive an hour later.

“Incidents of cars being set alight like this are very unusual,” he said.

“So to have two in one night suggests they are linked. We are keeping an open mind on whether there is also a link to the other damaged vehicles. A number of members of the public saw suspicious behaviour but did not report what they saw at the time. “Please report any suspicious behaviour, especially at night, immediately by dialling 999.”

He said officers would be carrying out more patrols in the affected areas.
