North Devon Council pans to remove equipment for Greenways and Brimlands in favour of goalposts, but will re-install some at Princess Avenue.

WORK is underway this month at three Ilfracombe parks, North Devon Council has announced.

It said old play equipment is being removed from both Greenways and Brimlands and will instead be replaced with football posts.

An area at Greenways will also be levelled to create a small football pitch and hard surfacing placed underneath the basketball net area.

Some play equipment will be re-installed at Princess Avenue, which the council says will dramatically improve the facilities currently on offer.

It is hoped the equipment will be used by a greater number of children, being close to Ilfracombe Junior School.

The North Devon Gazette had previously reported how parents who used Bicclescombe Park were furious after some play equipment for younger children was removed.

The council had said the equipment had reached the end of its life and it would be working with the community to replace it.

Speaking of the latest announcement, Councillor Derrick Spear, executive member for parks, leisure and culture, said: “Boosting the equipment at Princess Avenue will really improve the park and this is a great location for all the children at the junior school and surrounding families who live in this area.

“The new posts at Brimlands and Greenways will provide informal areas for football.”

Local ward member Cllr Geoff Fowler, added: “This part of town has always had a number of young families residing so by increasing facilities should encourage more use by youngsters in a safe environment.”

Fellow ward member Cllr Philip Webb said getting the best use from the play equipment at the various sites in Ilfracombe, together with planned improvements, was important for the children in the town.
