Pair walking from Woody Bay to Lee Abbey try to swim after becoming cut off.

ILFRACOMBE’S inshore lifeboat rescued two men cut off by the tide near Lee Abbey at Lynton last night (Tuesday).

The pair had been walking along the shoreline from Woody Bay back towards Lee Abbey but became cut off and tried to swim to safety.

They got as far as Crock Point, where they found they could go no further and made their way ashore.

The lifeboat launched at 7pm and as local coastguard teams from Lynmouth and Ilfracombe began a cliff descent, it stood by in the water.

Volunteer RNLI crew member Nick Waites went ashore to check on the pair and helmsman Duncan Thompson brought the boat in close to the rocks so they could be helped aboard.

The crew took the casualties to Lee Bay, where they handed the pair over to Ilfracombe’s coastguard team and representatives of the Lee Abbey management.

Duncan offered some words of advice for anyone walking along the coast: “It is important to remember the Bristol Channel has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, and many of the beaches and pathways are available to walk on during low tide become completely covered as the tide comes in,” he said.

“If you intend to walk along the coast, please do check the state of the tide, and be aware that somewhere you were able to walk earlier in the day may not be available to you upon your return.

“People should always carry a means of communication, in case of emergency dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. It always pays to let someone know where you are going and when you intend to return, so that they can raise the alarm if you are late back.”
